Estepona unveils the first Costa del Sol Marathon

A paradise to live in. A setting to fall in love with. The Costa del Sol is a delight for the senses, captivating at first sight. Estepona is one of the cities that best represents the soul of this coastline, which this year offers us a true challenge for October 11: the first Estepona Garden Costa del Sol Marathon.

This morning, José María García Urbano, mayor of Estepona, presented this sporting event, which aims to become a benchmark at national and international level. Because when the cold begins to take over the rest of the Peninsula and Europe, Estepona maintains all that warmth, brightness and magic that are part of its identity.

Jose María García Urbano, mayor of Estepona, highlighted that this race will be a “magnificent” showcase and a “great opportunity” to spotlight the virtues of the city. He also emphasized the uniqueness of this marathon, “which will be unique in Europe”, as it runs along a spectacular coastal trail that opens the city to the sea and through an urban center transformed into the garden of the Costa del Sol.

Estepona is a place closely connected to the running scene. The Estepona Half Marathon has become, in just four editions, one of the most attractive races for runners. The race experience, mild temperatures and that cosmopolitan character without losing the essence of Andalusian tradition attract more and more participants from outside Andalusia every year.

Miguel de los Santos, president of the Estepona Athletics Club, organizers of the previous four editions of the Estepona Half Marathon, spoke about “the idea of organizing a marathon”, which dates back a long time, and which this year will finally become a reality: “we will support the event to the fullest so that everyone comes to Estepona, enjoys this magnificent climate we have and gets to know this wonderful coastal trail”, said Miguel de los Santos, the first athlete from Estepona to compete in the Olympic Games, in Atlanta 1996 in the 110m hurdles.

The Half Marathon grows this year with the Estepona Garden Costa del Sol Marathon, which, limited to only 2,000 runners, will offer participants an exclusive race experience, in an event organized by Atresmedia. Álvaro Pitto, New Business Director at Lastlap Atresmedia, stated that with the Estepona Garden Costa del Sol Marathon “we want to deliver a unique, distinctive experience, a boutique marathon, only for 2,000 runners, due to the width limitations of this spectacular coastal trail. And all with an international projection, inspired by the Málaga Marathon, so that runners can discover this stunning corner. A marathon that is here to stay”.

42 kilometers and 195 unforgettable meters, with a course that takes advantage of much of the coastal trail, one of the most spectacular coastal stretches in southern Europe. With this Marathon, Estepona takes a decisive step toward establishing itself as an international active tourism destination, combining tourism, sport and quality of life.

Registration for the Estepona Garden Costa del Sol Marathon is available on the official race website (www.maratoncostadelsol.com) at a price of 50 euros for the Marathon and 30 euros for the classic half marathon distance.

There will also be VIP options available to experience Estepona and its entire 23-kilometer coastal trail with special services.

The Costa del Sol Marathon is supported by the Estepona City Council, sponsored by Mancomunidad Costa del Sol Occidental, Azata, Taraje and Hotel Ikos, and with the collaboration of Hidralia, Urbaser, Carrefour, Renault Rombosol, Restaurante El Cielo, Grupo Trocadero and Afar4.
